Based at the intersection between Charing Cross and Whitehall, Trafalgar Square is filled with iconic London sights – the square itself houses the fountains, statues of lions, and of course the impressive Nelson’s Column (which stands at 169 ft 3ins tall). The north side of the square is taken up with The National Gallery, and the Houses Of Parliament are visible to the south, looking down Whitehall. Also nearby is St. Martin In The Fields church, which has a wonderful crypt area where curious tourists can enjoy a cup of tea!

History Of Trafalgar Square

This is a post about London’s famous Trafalgar Square. We’re going to tell you all about the history of the area and the amazing landmarks close by, like Nelson’s Column, the National Gallery and St. Martin in the Fields church.

Nelson’s Column

The impressive memorial to Admiral Nelson stands at 169ft 3ins. Nelson died in the Battle Of Trafalgar in 1805, and the monument was erected a surprisingly short 35 years later, to a design by William Railton.

You might be surprised to know that the four bronze lions at the foot of Nelson’s Column weren’t actually added until 1867, though they were included in Railton’s original design for the column.

The monument was refurbished in 2006 at a cost of £420,000.
